NC State UniversityLateral Entry Program

WCPSS Do you have a bachelor’s degree in math, science, social studies, English or a related field? Are you considering an exciting and rewarding career as a public middle or high school teacher?

Wake Technical Community College and North Carolina State University have partnered to offer a certificate program that can help you achieve your dream!

The Lateral Entry Certificate curriculum provides a course of study leading to the development of general pedagogy competencies needed to become licensed to teach by the North Carolina Department of Public Instruction.

Prospective students do not need to be currently employed as a lateral entry teacher to enroll in this program. Instead, this alternative licensure certificate allows you to take the required courses first and feel confident in your ability to teach before stepping into a classroom!

Please read the qualifications page to determine if you meet all requirements for acceptance. Prospective students are required to attend an information session to learn about licensing requirements and details of the program.

Additional requirements, such as pre-service training and passing the PRAXIS II, are required for licensure.

The Lateral Entry Certificate does not lead to licensure in Elementary Education or English as a Second Language.
